How do I change my Windows XP/Office XP licenses without reformatting?

My church had loaned out a copy of Windows and Office to me but now they need those licenses back. How can I ';release'; the current licenses and purchase new ones without reformatting? How do I change my Windows XP/Office XP licenses without reformatting?
you can't return a licence, just return the cd to your church, if you want to buy a new licensed cd and re install xp, but back up your old version and don't do a clean install, just take the repair option. How do I change my Windows XP/Office XP licenses without reformatting?
Warning: The following answer involves editing the system registry. Do not do this unless you know what you are ding. Back up your registry first, then perform the following:

Open Start, Run, and type in regedit. Then go to HKey Local Machine / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows / Current Version. Click on Current Version in the left pane. In the right pane, look for the key that says ';ProductId'; Double click ';ProductId'; and type in the license number of the new one that you bought.

Office will be a bit trickier - depends on what version you have. Here is the Microsoft article on how to do that:

How do I change Vista to XP?

My new laptop is Vista but I'm finding it an absolute pain trying to load programs that I have on my XP onto it - some offer an upgrade but others just do not work.

As a result I have decided that life would be easier if I changed the laptop Vista to run XP. Both computers came with OEM and I do have the re-installation discs. What is the easiest and simplest way of making the change? How do I change Vista to XP?
Ask someone in yahoo answers to give you a product key for XP then go to the start menu, right click on Computer, scroll down, and click change product key then type the code and there you go.

How do I change Vista to XP?
the easiest way to go from vista to xp is to reformat. Other ways would include reverting back to your old system if you saved xp that way. However, you will find that this can become complicated. And by the way, you are not the first.
Vistas not that bad but should come with a special program that change the OS to a previous version. You'll have to do a bit of digging I'm pretty sure its in there though.
I believe this is correct but hope someone else can confirm or dispute it. The answer depends on whether you have ';recovery'; disks or full installation disks.

If you only have recovery disks, you cannot install XP on the Vista machine and vice versa. When both XP and Vista are installed on a computer, they coordinate with that computer and cannot be moved to a different machine. To re-install either op system, you must use the recovery disks that came with the machine. So, I don't think you can change your Vista machine to XP using the disks you have on hand.

However, if you have full install disks for either op system, you should be able to install that op system on either machine. You may have a little trouble with Windows Genuine Advantage programs, but they can be bypassed rather easily.

If anyone can add to this (or correct it), please do so. I'm anxious to hear the whole story too.
Install software is almost always proprietary to the manufacturer and model number of the computer it came with. Software for an HP1015 will not work on an HP 1212 for example.

you can't just take the install disks from one computer and load them onto another computer. I believe that you would need to purchase clean install Windows XP software.

How to make a batch file to change a win XP registry value?

hey people, i wanted to know how we can edit the windows XP registry through command prompt and can a batch file be created for the same? How to make a batch file to change a win XP registry value?
Yes, and you don't actually have to create a .reg file to edit the registry as cmd has a command especially for that. The command is 'reg', type 'reg /?' for more info on it.

Examples:

reg add HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentV?/v EXAMPLE /t REG_SZ /d ';C:\Program Files\examplefolder\examplefile.bat';

This command would add a string value to the registry path 'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current?(which, by the way, is the registry folder which runs stuff at startup), the value would be named 'EXAMPLE' and it's value would be ';C:\Program Files\examplefolder\examplefile.bat';. This means that after executing this command, a file called examplefile.bat would start every time I boot up my computer.

This can be used to change, add, delete, and do a plethora of other things to do registry. A word of warning though, changing anything in the registry could have dire consequences, use with caution :PHow to make a batch file to change a win XP registry value?
Yes, it can be done. Your batch file should:

1) Create a '.reg' file containing instructions to regedit to tell it what to do.

2) Run regedit on the '.reg' file.

3) Remove the '.reg' file.

Right click while on your desktop. Click on properties. Go to the desktop tab. You can select your desktop icon size and style.
You would have to replace the icons with ones that match your background. You can do it, you have to create the image in an image edior - there are several free programs to create icons. Thoguh when you change your background it will mean having to change them, and these icons will also appear in other places such as windows explorer.

How do I change my OS?

How to I change to XP?

If you want to have XP set up as your default OS on boot up, then go to this page and do as they say. It's a pretty simple command change:

    This Should Work

When Bios Boots before it finishes enter your boot menu then select your primary hard drive, then it should see both OS's and ask which to boot to.

If the doesn't work the OS may not have installed correctly.
Reboot your computer, and select the XP OS. However, I know there's a way to do so without rebooting. Unfortunately, I'm unsure what way that is.

How much performance loss would I get changing from XP to Vista?

I basically only use my computer for gaming, and I really want to switch from XP to Vista, but I don't know how much of a hit my old computer would take dealing with extra resources.

    2GB RAM

    ATI Radeon HD4350 512mb

    Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUS)

I would like information based on the assumption that I have all extra features on Vista turned offHow much performance loss would I get changing from XP to Vista?
Instead of upgrading to Vista upgrade to the new Windows 7.

Windows 7 has lower hardware requirements than Vista and has

better performance. How much performance loss would I get changing from XP to Vista?
In window vista, you can get very good theme and fast shut down but among windows XP, you can find slow shut down problem. When you are using Vista Then your system will be perform slow because windows vista is heavy windows among Window XP. Now you can make a decision.

    Thanks!!!!!!!
why bother with Vista when 7 just came out. If anything, it should run better than vista.
Oh dear GOD, take it from me, if you can upgrade to Windows 7 do so! Vista is the most irritating thing to deal with! XP is much better! I have had three laptops with xp, vista, and now windows 7. go for seven.
Your ram is good but I would go with a quad core processor. What you have might work well. I run games all the time on vista and have no problems what soever. It does support directx 10 but most games don't use that anyway so you are probably OK. I have 2GB of Ram and have no problems but I do have an Nvidea 8800 Gtx with 768Mb of on-board mem.

What should I change my OS to (windows Xp, Linux, something else)?

hello I recently changed from XP to windows 7 but it is the most worthless peice of crap (way to slow) i know its only slow because of my ram (512mb) so i was wondering should i go back to windows XP or should i swich to a linux distrebution if linux which one? I would really like to try running a mac OS but im not sure it's possible with a pc.if it is could you explain how to. i have 160 gig hd. i would just like something that would run smoother then windows 7. please and thanksWhat should I change my OS to (windows Xp, Linux, something else)?
Advice from one grade 9 to another: with that RAM, I'd switch to Vista if you trust that the problems have been fixed (works fine for me) or just switch back to XP. Yes, Mac is a higher end OS but for user ease and overall quality I would stick with goo old Microsoft. Linux may be decent, but if I were to get it I would just use it as a dual-boot. No, stick with Vista or XP with your RAM. One other thing: get more RAM. You'll definitely be glad you did. What should I change my OS to (windows Xp, Linux, something else)?
Windows 7 is actually great. Much better than any other OS Microsoft has released. You do need more ram though. 512K is very low compared to what most PC come with today. It is also very cheap. You can pick up 2 gig for less than $100.00. You would see a HUGE difference in Windows 7 and I think you would probably like it.

Even XP with 512 is slow and crappy.
Why not just add more memory to your PC? XP will run better on 512MB than Win7 and Linux will run even better than XP. I like OpenSUSE. You can download a live CD to see how it runs on your PC before installing to the hard drive.
ubuntu linux should perform fairly in 51Meg if you are not doing alot of heavy graphics.

Try the live CD. One warning - the live CD is slow because CD drives are slow. You will have to install it to see the real speed.
Um windows 7 runs faster than any other operating system i have ever seen. From the amount of ram you have all i can say is its time to get a new computer. My personal favourite is linux. Linux is just uber theres just not a lot of stuff compatable with it, which sucks. Do you have the full version of windows 7 or just the beta. The beta has so many bugs its mind boggling. Try upgrading to the full version and getting more ram lol. My computer loads from start to applications in like 30 or so seconds with windows 7. Faster then any of my other operating systems.
Linux is the only answer. It will run on any pile of crap.(that's what you have)

Don't bash an OS by trying to run it on a machine that is incompatible and then complaining it doesn't work for you.
Actually, windows 7 should run smoothly and quickly, just change your RAM, you need at least 1GB of RAM for windows 7 to run properly, the following website http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11489087%26amp;whse=BC%26amp;Ne=4000000%26amp;eCat=BC|84|20522|62019|76339%26amp;N=4026018%26amp;Mo=4%26amp;pos=2%26amp;No=0%26amp;Nr=P_CatalogName:BC%26amp;cat=76339%26amp;Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1%26amp;lang=en-US%26amp;Sp=C%26amp;ec=BC-EC9-Cat20522%26amp;topnav= TELLS YOU WHAT REQUIREMENTS ARE NEEDED for windows 7 to run well. I know this because I'm going to upgrade to windows 7 because of all the good ratings like on CNET.com (good website for reviewing technology) and I have 512 RAM so on Black Friday, I'm going to buy windows 7, a 2gb RAM and an larger harddrive. Check it out, windows 7 is a good OS.
Ubuntu 9.10 should be your choice.
Try Puppy Linux ,great for older computers with low ram.I am really a novice but even I was able to burn the cd and get it up and running on my old laptop in no time at all,and all for free! Here are some sites to help you get started!Good Luck!

    http://www.puppylinux.com/

    http://www.puppylinux.org/main/index.php
Yeah, I agree with the others. You need to upgrade your ram 1st. Some older computers will only hold 512 or 1gig of ram. If your ram is maxed out at 512- then you need to go back to xp.

If you can add more ram, then you may like w7 better.

If you are just not happy with windows.....I highly recommend Linux Ubuntu 9.10. But it would do better with more ram.

1 gig is just about the minimum for a modern OS.

If you would put up the specs on your computer...some of these nice compugeeks will be happy to advise you.
Your best bet is Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10). Works like a champ and supports Windows Media files and other programs you are used to such as Adobe. It is incredibly easy and has incredible documentation.

PS - No matter what you do you absolutely should get more RAM. You will see a huge performance boost. You will need to match it to the original type (both DDR-{NumericValue} and PC {NumericValue} are important and must match exactly to the original). Just get larger RAM chips that support those two and you'll be set for an awesome experience.
If you had used the free Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, before you installed W7, you would have known that your PC needed additional RAM:

So, without knowing your PC's specs, the smart thing to do is to bump your RAM to at least 2 GBs, and give Windows 7 a second chance. 2 GB of DDR2 RAM, if your motherboard supports it, is less that $ 40 at Tigerdirect. ca. XP SP3 would run way better, too.

Try LinuxMint 7, you'll fall in love with it! It runs ';not too badly'; with 512 MB RAM, but more RAM is always better. I HAPPILY use it on 5 of 6 of my computers.
It is not realistic to expect Windows 7 to run well on 512mb RAM

Upgrade your RAM to 2gb and you will soon change your mind about Windows 7

    RECOMMENDED LINUX DISTRO.

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 7 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 7 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

    INSTALL LINUX MINT WITHIN WINDOWS

Linux Mint has a feature called mint4win based on the Wubi installer (Ubuntu) http://wubi-installer.org/ which enables you to install Linux Mint within windows (Windows 7 run mint4win in vista compatability mode)

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win like Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the LiveCD you have just created and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where mint4win comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint.

Don't do things backwards. First save all your important data files to a USB drive.

Install WinXP on partition 1, 12 gigs, ntfs format

Reinstall your apps and data and make sure everything works like before.

    Install Mepis v 8.0 on partion 2, 6 gigs, ext3

Make partion 3, 1 gig, linux swap

    Logical Partiton 5, 60 gig, ext3 to mount /home

Logical Partition6, what's left, FAT32, drive D: on windows and /Data on linux.

Mepis will install grub in the boot sectors of the hard drive and will be set up to give you a choice between winows and linux. Make sure everything works.

    From windows,

Make copies of your data files to D:/

    From Mepis Linux

Find the applications that will work with your data files.

Become comfortable with the menus, how to shut down and boot up, how to do backups to your USB drive, how to find and load new applications. Hook up printers. Attach to wireless networks. Burn CDs Get your yahoo or google mail.

As time goes by, note what you use in Windows and find Linux applications that do what you need. The linux application will might do only part of what the windows one does, but if it does what you need.

My windows partition is used for a web application that will only run under Explorer, and for an encrypted USB drive whose windows-only software must be used at work.

Look for a Linux application call Euler. It will help with your math homework. It is a super-calculator that does algebra, too.

Sell your Win7 CD to a buddy or keep it for when you get a dual core processor, 500 gig drive and 4 gig of memory. You may want to look at student priced versions of Word and Excel. Most are for college students, bu occasionally they are for high school students. Never upgrade an OS except for security patches and when you need an application that will not run without the upgrade.

When you get a new OS, get the hardware recommended for it. Ignore minimums; they are too optimistic.

If Mepis 8.0 overtaxes your machine, use Antix 8.2.
I agree with most of the answers... I would install Ubuntu Linux (and you can keep windows and make it a dual boot)

    ADVANTAGES LINUX :

    1) FREE (most versions are)

    2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)

    3) It is FASTER/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet

    4) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

For me don't switch to XP, Vista is more powerful and stylis than XP. Windows vista has more feature than windows xp. Have you ever seen an OS that enables to make your USB devices into RAM, which improves your system performance. Vista does these and called ';Ready Boost';, while XP does not support these. Vista has a Super Fetch technology which enables user to multi-task extremely, while XP does not have this that will result poor multi-tasking performance.Vista is already HD while XP is not HD Ready. In sort Vista has more power than XP

Everything that the Windows XP window has is there like the pictures next to the items on the start menu but things like the color of the menu and the way the start button look is wrong. The Start button is just a gray/off white color and its a like a rectangle shape (classic windows shape). Does anyone know how to get it back to the Windows XP shape, that green ';bubble';? I right clicked on the start button/properties and Start Menu is selected so everything is right but the task bar and start button are gray/off white, its not blue like its suppose to be. How do I change from windows xp to windows vista on my laptop?

You should first make sure your PC can run Windows Vista.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows

Once your PC passes the test you want to back up your picture's, Documents and anything else you want. If possible make more that one backup. You can use DVDs or USBs or and other recordable media.

This will show you step by step how to reinstall Windows Vista.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/105866/stHow do I change from windows xp to windows vista on my laptop?
To upgrade to Windows vista, just put the cd into your cd drive and the install program will pop up automatically. You will not lose your files if you upgade and do not clean install.
First, make sure your PC meets the minimum requirements. You need at least 512mb of RAM and at least 1GHZ Processor and 20gb of hard drive space.

You can check all this by clicking start and right click my computer and click properties.

If you meet the requirements, buy a Windows Vista disk and turn on your computer and insert the disk.

Run the disk and just click install. If you want to keep all your stuff, click upgrade when it asks whether you want to upgrade or do a clean install.
All you need is to purchase an ';upgrade'; version. Then install it. you will not lose your data.
First backup your files. Never risk loosing your personal data. You should always backup your info. But if you load the disk while you are still in Windows XP then it will simply upgrade you to Vista. But I stress again you must back up your info. It will not delete anything unless something goes wrong. Just start up windows as usual and once you get to your desktop put in the Vista CD and choose the Upgrade option.

Please take time to read my answer :

This is an ideal opportunity to try out the new Linux Ubuntu 7.10, the graphics and effects are far superior to Vista see link below :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5Oz

Ubuntu is free as it is open source, the download link is :

    http://www.ubuntu.com/

Once you have downloaded Ubuntu 7.10, you will have an ISO image file. You will then need to create a bootable disc of the file.

This can be achieved by using Nero Burning ROM if you have it or MagicISO a free trial of which is available for download :

    http://www.magiciso.com/

Once you have created the bootable disc, we are going to call it the LIVE CD.

Start your PC from the Ubuntu live CD, select start or install when prompted, once the Ubuntu desktop has appeared in the top left hand corner there is an option to install, double click and the installation screen will appear.

Once Ubuntu has asked you about regional settings etc. it will then take you into the partitioning table, if you select the default setting which is on the top, this will set up a dual boot scenario with Vista, or use entire disk next option down if you want to get rid of Vista, if choosing this option back up your data first as the drive will be wiped, Ubuntu will then automatically sort the space it needs and install its own Grub bootloader.

I am so taken with Ubuntu 7.10, I have ditched windows altogether and I am now running Ubuntu as my primary operating system.

You can run quite a number of windows applications on Ubuntu using WINE, a piece of software that emulates windows. For details of this visit :

    http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

    http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wine

Using Linux may initially seem daunting in places, but you will get use to it, I did.

You can also run Ubuntu using the Live CD without any kind of installation. However this will be somewhat slower and you would be restricted as to running applications, it would just for browsing the web really.

I work with both Ubuntu and Vista, Vista has been an expensive disappointment for me and sits mainly redundant on my hard drive and I consider Ubuntu to be far superior of the two.

I will break it down in to categories and give each system a rating out of 10.

    System resource friendly :

    Ubuntu 10/10

    Vista 4/10

    Graphics (Eye Candy) :

    Ubuntu 10/10

    Vista 7/10

    Ease of use :

    Ubuntu 7/10

    Vista 9/10

    Software compatability :

Ubuntu 4/10 (Open Source alternatives in some cases are available) also WINE as described above can be used.

    Vista 8/10

    Wireless compatability :

    Ubuntu 5/10

    Vista 8/10

    Networking compatability :

    Ubuntu 7/10

    Vista 8 /10

    Security :

    Ubuntu 9/10

    Vista 8/10

    Gaming :

    Ubuntu 3/10

    Vista 8/10

This category sourced from various sites.

    Office software :

    Ubuntu 10/10 (Free)

    Vista 2 /10

    Price :

    Ubuntu 10/10 (Free)

    Vista 2/10

    Overall performance :

    Ubuntu 9/10

    Vista 6/10

    Value :

    Ubuntu 8/10

    Vista 2/10

It should be noted that these ratings are based on my experience working extensively with both Ubuntu and Vista.

Of the two for me Ubuntu wins hands down. How do I change vista to xp?

ok.. There are many ways to do this.

    1) You can install a msstyle theme (mostly free)

    2) You can use something like WindowsBlinds (will cost you)

    3) Use a transformation pack. (Eg: Vista Tranfomation pack)

    4) Use Resource Hacker to edit or build a msstyle to create unique theme for urself

A good msstyle for start is the Royale theme. Now also available Royale Remixed (my fav). http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/44294818/

Or goto www.wincuztomize.com where u can download theme software (WindowsBlinds) to get awesome looks. U'll have to pay for the full

    versions.

Or u can download resource hacker and open a msstyles (even the default XP luna.msstyle file) from it and change the bitmaps to ur liking. U can edit everythin from this. Startmenu, taskbar, scrollbars and everything.

But to apply the theme u have to patch a file in XP, so I advice you to insta the Royale theme or the Royale Remixed themes first coz it automatically patches this file which enables other themes to be installed.

How to change vista to xp on a laptop?

someone i know has a laptop with vista and she wants to change it to xp. she has a system recovery disc for xp home edition that came with emachine. her laptop is NOT an emachine, im not sure what brand it is. anyway can she put this disc in and get xp on her laptop? How to change vista to xp on a laptop?
Because XPs still regarded as the best Operating System (OS) Microsoft ever made and Vista will be like ME one of those flashes in the pan that will only be remembered for the PAIN it inflicted and businesses absolute refusal to use it ever. After returning 3 Vista SP1 computers, I gave up and returned them all for a Mac and also have XP loaded on that-I feel your pain. However, I would first advise copying your hard drive and all it's setting and drivers before trying to put XP onto your computer.

Microsoft deliberately tried to make it as difficult as possible to do that, but if there is a will, there are ways right?

Putting XP on your system is not as easy as simple as just loading the software in over Vista. Here is a link in how to upgrade your computer to XP. Understand, you will need to perform some research before you do anything to make sure you have everything you need and don't get into a position you have no OS at all to use because you missed a step. As you can see, the Techies call XP an upgrade to a better system. About 33% of people who buy Vista upgrade to XP.

Again,I totally understand your pain and been there, but chose a different route. How to change vista to xp on a laptop?
No problem. Please follow the instructions carefully.Don't go forward until you have all the drivers

no, she could not use the system recovery disc that's for emachine because it is solely configured and made for an emachine computer.

the only way to change from vista to xp if you don't have a recovery cd is to format the hard drive of the laptop and install a fresh copy of windows xp on the laptop...

a word of warning though... be sure that all device drivers for the laptop has a windows xp compatibility, else everything will be messed up after you install xp....
I don't think that the system recovery disc would not work on the other machine, and Windows XP is now only available to manufactures.
Stick with vista and install the free service pack 1 upgrade you will then find vista faster than XP and is excellent

Can i change my OS from XP to Ubuntu, but keeping XP on a disk/flash drive for rebooting?

my laptop has XP, but i would really like Ubuntu. i however would like to keep my XP system on a cd-rom or on a removable flash drive, in case i want to sell the computer or change back to XP (doubt it ;P)

Is this possible? if so, how?Can i change my OS from XP to Ubuntu, but keeping XP on a disk/flash drive for rebooting?
Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning

    http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) User Guide

Ubuntu 10.04 and Linux Mint 9 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

LUg.Can i change my OS from XP to Ubuntu, but keeping XP on a disk/flash drive for rebooting?
Most laptops have a hidden recovery partition (usually D:) that's accessible by a keystroke/s at boot.

Check to see if yours has one.

If it hasn't, you're going to need a bootable XP installation disk. You can't just copy the system to disk/USB.

Another option is to 'dual boot' with Ubuntu...

    http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_windo
I suggest you to dual boot it.

How to change window xp theme to vista?

if you wanted to change the theme, you can download it through here:

and if you want to get all in one pack:

http://www.download.com/Vista-TransformaHow to change window xp theme to vista?
Google ';Vista Transformation Pack';How to change window xp theme to vista?
toss it all in the trash and buy a Mac !
dont do it, stay with xp, vista is not compatible with alot of xp software and hardware, so you would have to spend alot of money. also since vista is fairly new, it does have alot of bugs in its programming
    Free here: http://vista-transformation-pack.en.soft
    Best way?......buy Vista!

If you just want the eye candy, you can use Windowblinds, this program makes it possible to change your desktop in any theme you like but slows your PC down!

There are also free theme's which require you to install a patch and remove your i386 map (Windows recovery map with all default drivers and settings) which is not really advisable because if you install new hardware windows keeps asking for your original installation cd.

If your videocard is up-to-date you can try:

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enh

This program can simulate the flip effect from vista for free they also have a nice program for creating 4 virtual desktops almost like Ubuntu (Linux) does:

    http://www.download.com/Shock-4Way-3D/30

Remember that every change of your shell by using 3rd party software will slow your system down and could make it instable.

    Good Luck!

';Downgrading'; from Vista to XP is not as difficult as you may think, but it does entail some time-consuming operations. Many online sources claim to offer techniques for reinstalling XP without having to reformat your hard disk. Based on my research, however, deleting the Vista partition and installing XP in its place is arguably the easiest approach. Moreover, this method ensures a clean install that is uncontaminated by Vista leftovers.

With your XP installation CD and your application discs in hand, you're ready to begin:

Step 1. Back up your data. Unfortunately, you can't restore in XP a backup that you created using Vista's Backup and Restore Center. That means you have to either back up your data files manually or use a third-party backup tool that works in both XP and Vista. One such program is 2BrightSparks' SyncBack (more info), which is available in free and paid versions.

Don't bother backing up your applications; you'll need to reinstall them from their installation CDs after XP is back in place.

    Do back up the folders that your portable apps use to store their data. The portable apps themselves won't need to be reinstalled, but you'll have to restore their data files from the backup. Managing portable apps is discussed in the Oct. 18, 2007, Top Story, ';Free software on USB enables portable computing.';

Step 2. If necessary, configure your BIOS to boot your computer from a CD, if one is present. Insert your XP installation disk and reboot.

Step 3. When XP setup loads, follow the on-screen prompts to accept the license agreement and continue installing XP. When you get to the screen prompting you for the partition on which to install XP, select the one containing Vista and press D to delete the partition. You'll need to press Enter and then L to confirm that you want to delete all data and software on the partition.

Step 4. Once you've returned to the partitioning screen, select the unpartitioned space that used to be Vista. You may see that this space has been selected for you automatically. Next, press C to create a partition. Specify the desired partition size, or press Enter to accept the default allotment, which is the maximum possible partition. (Simply pressing Enter instead of C also creates a new partition of the default size.)

Step 5. If you're still seeing the partition screen, make sure the desired partition is selected and press Enter. Choose the option that formats the disk as NTFS and press Enter again.

Step 6. Follow the prompts on-screen to continue the XP installation.

Step 7. Reinstall your applications and restore your data from your backup.

That's all there is to it. If you ever change your mind, you can always insert your Vista DVD and upgrade from XP to Vista all over again.

Some computers do that I believe. I myself have a vista and it does that same thing.

Can I change windows XP to windows vista?.where I have to contact ? At what cost?

Dear Sir, I am willing to have windows Vista for my P.C.I have already installed Windows XP,Now can I upgrade XP to vista. How cost it will be.Can I do it myself,I am not a computer expert at all. Please advice meCan I change windows XP to windows vista?.where I have to contact ? At what cost?
go to Microsoft and download ';Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor';, once downloaded it will scan your computer and tell you if your system is Vista ready, this means that it will check everything that you have installed and let you know which version of Vista you can get, it will also tell you if you need to make any adjustments to your system before installing Vista. You can then go out and purchase a Vista upgrade and install it over XP, it is very straightforward. Some friendly advice, don't upgrade to Vista yet, leave it for maybe 6 months to a year, there are quite a few problems with Vista that are yet to be sorted. good luck. Can I change windows XP to windows vista?.where I have to contact ? At what cost?
I think that it is better to buy Windows Vista Ultimate for Rs.17000 than upgrading from XP
you can buy the upgrade pack at like ,target for 100$

    :D
First you need to select which windows Vista version you would like, whether it be Home, Home Premium, Ultimate etc.. then you need to purchase an upgrade edition, ie Microsoft Windows Ultimate Upgrade, Run the CD/DVD and it will guide you throught the rest, check you local computer shop for prices
Buy the disk and stick it in same as xp.
Of course you can do it yourself. Just go out and buy ';Windows Vista Premium Upgrade'; at a computer/office store, put the disk in while running xp and enjoy. If you have any problems trying to install, just call up Microsoft and ask (your entitled to help with upgrade edition) or ask here. It will set you back $160 US.

Oh, and you could also get Home Basic for less, but it isnt very good, or get Ultimate for more, but it is probably over-kill unless your a computer expert.
Yes, you can upgrade it. You will have to buy a copy of the software, though. Walmart has it, along with most other places that sell computer and electronics like Target, Best Buy, etc. There are different ones that you can get. You can get the one that is just the basic Vista stuff or you can pay more and get the really fancy stuff if you do a lot more on your computer then surf the web. I might be wrong about this, but I think that the cheapest one is about $99.00, and the price goes up depending on which one that you get. I'm not sure what all is involved with installing it to your computer, but I'm sure that it is pretty simple. I'm guessing it is installed just like any other program. You will also be able to contact Microsoft if you have any problems or questions! hope this helps a little! :-)

I have Vista home edition for my HCL Z2304 model laptop...now want change it to XP. please tell me how???? ?
first of all save all your important data on a CD or create two partitions (or how many you want). let's name them as C and D. C is where your operating system XP will be installed. everything from C will be deleted so save everything you want on D.

so either you save everything on a CD or D drive.

now you need windows XP home edition or professional CD. It has to be a CD. this CD will install windows xp on your system.

Next you need drivers. Finding correct drivers is a complete headache and can be found on the internet. you will need drivers for internet, graphics, sound and audio and more. after finding these two you are all set.

now read this page to know how to install windows xp.

http://lifehacker.com/software/windows/gI have Vista home edition for my HCL Z2304 model laptop...now want change it to XP. please tell me how???? ?
first, get the software for ur motherboard for xp,

like touchpad ,audio, video, lan, etc by googling thro' internet.

then, clean install winxp and install all drivers. bingo!!!!

Change the xp os to vista?

hey can i change my winxp prof to a new one os like vista or linux? can you teach me how or what should i do? tnxChange the xp os to vista?
you're can switch windows XP to windows vista in:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsChange the xp os to vista?
first you should see if vista is compatible with your pc or laptop..
for a windows OS, you need to buy a windows CD, ether a full bootable program or an upgrade disk. Then just insert the cd, reboot the computer, and follow the on screen prompts. The same is true with a linux disk, although it is suggest to install them on a separate partition while still in windows if you plan on doing a dual boot instead of overwriting XP.

If rebooting the computer to the new OS setup screen, then set the bios to check the cd before the hard drive for a bootable program.

PS: before upgrading to vista, I suggest getting the vista upgrade adviser to make sure your computer is compatible with vista. You have no idea what problems you could avoid by doing this. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai
you go to a store like best buy and buy windows vista i always thought linuex was a computer system like windows am i right
Trust me! You don't want to do that. Sure Vista has some nice features, but XP Pro is more stable and prone from crashes. Vista has been a nightmare fore millions of users. Do yourself a favor and wait till the next Windows OS is released, hopefully they will have learned their lesson. I always give a new OS a few months before I install it. Look what happened with Windows ME also.

The main thing to ask yourself is, what are you going to use your system for? If you want to avoid viruses and stability, then look to Linux. But there are numerous disadvantages to that also. The multimedia is not at good and you options for gaming will be greatly demised.

Make a list of what you do on your computer, then rank what you like to do the most. Then match that up with the strengths and weaknesses of each OS to give you a clearer picture.

    Best of Luck!
honestly I think that U can change it, U would probably have to uninstall the current software, and then install the new one, but I've heard that people have a lot of problems with Vista.

How do I delete my Vista to change it too XP?

I have a Gateway laptop and I have downloaded all the hardware that I need from the Gateway site. When I try installing XP, it tells me that it can't read my hard drive and can't proceed, and then when I tried to format my hard drive in Vista, it told me that I can't format it because I need the hard drive to run the computer. How can I delete VISTA?!??! Thanks. How do I delete my Vista to change it too XP?
You need to format your drive with acronis drive cleanser, or other similar bootable disc.

Once you have done this, you will find that xp will install, but remember you will be prompted for a serial number for xp during the install procedure. How do I delete my Vista to change it too XP?
Ubuntu live disk. Use gpartd to wipe whole drive and create NTFS partition.
put the windows installation disk and when the disk partition manager (asks you where to install xp) comes, delete the xp and vista drive and try loading in it. be careful that do not delete your other drives.dont install xp through vista. insert the disk %26amp; restart the computer and when it asks to press any key to boot from cd give enter.
easy, you put your xp disc in the cd-rom, restart the computer and it will take you through the prompts, it will ask you to format the hard drive and reinstall windows xp, just be wary that it will delete anythin you had on your hdd so make sure you back everythin you want to keep up.
First I would do a system restore back to it's default setting,

then you should be able to do it.

    ps

what did the laptop come load with?

if it's vista you will not be able to install xp on it.

Is there anyway to change from Windows ME to Windows XP?

i bought this computer, Emachines T3100, for 50bucks off some family who didnt know about computers and wanted to get rid of it. They only used it for Windows Media Player and some cheap games.

I just took everything off and i saw it was ME, i was wondering if i can change it to XP and how?Is there anyway to change from Windows ME to Windows XP?
Yes you can you buy windows xp and install it.Is there anyway to change from Windows ME to Windows XP?
Yes, you can upgrade the computer to Windows XP. You will need to purchase an upgrade disc.
    OMG! I die for this **** 8P
Don't think it would be worth your effort. Windows Me requires less than 2GB where as XP requires up to 15GB on your hard drive of which this old computer will not handle. The OS from ME to XP is totally different where as one runs on one partition while the other runs off of ';two.'; As much as some on here seem to think all you have to do it ';load'; it, it is not that SIMPLE.
