the first answer is correct...however, you can change your desktop to an ';appleish'; desktop if you like.
Get a mate who has Vista to do a print screen and send it to you.
this is a cheap and easy way to theme your xp machine to look like a desktop there are plenty of free themes..

I want know how to change the xp from vista?

i want know how to change the xp from vista in this query i have some problem facing hard disk not conneted showing ple help usI want know how to change the xp from vista?
I have done that immediately as i got my thinkpad t400 and am still running it today. All you need is an XP disc. Put it in your drive and boot up your computer. (because most computers seem to have boot set to the disc drive first i'm just going to assume this fact) After you have turned on your computer you will be faced with a black screen prompting you to press any key to boot disc. Windows xp will start its preload and there will be instructions on a white strip at the bottom of a blue screen. Just follow the instructions until you come to a screen that shows your partitions. Delete all your partitions by following the instructions on the bottom of the blue screen and create 1 new partition. Then just hit ENTER to intsall XP into this partition. A partition is a segment of the HDD and by creating 1 partition you will have used most of your HDD to be accessed by the operating system.

After the reformat and installation you should encounter a screen that is just like the day you bought it.

Once everything is installed you must go to your manufacturer's website (whether it be dell or hp or lenovo or compaq or anything and download the DRIVERS in the support section of the SPECIFIC MODEL of your computer. You can see the missing drivers in the hardware manager of xp.

At this point i've come to the realization that you might not have the technical skills required to do this. It is much simpler than it sounds and if you can get your computer to a local computer repair store or something like that. Tell them you need a reformat and reinstall of windows xp then they should be able to do it within a couple hours MAX.I want know how to change the xp from vista?
...you cannot switch on to an older version if you have vista installed on ur Hard Disk...

but you can always use LAN to format ur HD...and then install XP(bootable needed in this case)..hope it helps..!!..

How can i change windows xp from korean to english language?

Start --%26gt; Control Panel (looks like a clipboard with a pencil writing a checkmark) --%26gt; If necessary ';switch to classic view'; (this is only if you have 10 or fewer icons, it is on the top left, also looks like a clipboard with a pencil writing a checkmark)

You should now have over 20 icons. Choose the one that looks like a globe (planet) called ';Regional and Language Options';.

It's in here somewhere. In english it's the second tab on the top ';Languages';, then a button called ';details'; then a drop down where you can select the input language.

Find on the net, images (.jpg's, .gif's, .png's) of what you want %26amp; download (or 'prntscrn' %26amp; crop), then save the ready image.

    Creating your own XP icon:

Take the foto you want as an icon; process/save as an '; .ico '; file.

I use '; irfanview '; for this, but other app's will do it also.

With the image open, File%26gt; Save as...%26gt; select from drop menu '.ico' %26gt; OK out.

Note that large fotos, with lots of detail tend to get 'washed' out, so your end product may not be quite what you envision.

Put that new image into 'icons' folder:

    Icons folder:

    My computer%26gt; 'c' drive%26gt; Windows%26gt; System 32%26gt; Icons

Back on the desktop, right click the current icon to be changed%26gt; Properties%26gt; Change Icon%26gt; Browse...%26gt; navigate to the Icon folder %26amp; select...

Highlight an icon and click change icon

It will show you some choices or you can browse for others

I don't understand how to get to 24hr in the first place. Have you had 24hr clock since you first installed. If so, maybe your time zone requires 24 hour time or something. Or maybe your XP Home disc is a pirated/fake disc. I have seen strange errors like this with pirated editions, that's why I have a legal copy.

    Hack Your XP Boot Screen

Maybe you really like the ';Windows XP Pro/Home'; screen that appears when WinXP boots up, but I doubt it. Jeez. You know what OS you run. You know Microsoft made it. Does it really need to remind you at every startup? No. Allow me to show you how to make the currently obvious (and boring) boot screen say whatever you want. You have two options.

    1. Use a boot screen changing program that walks you through the process.

    2. Hack your boot screen.

    Boot screen programs

I really like Stardock's BootSkin, a free program that works with Windows 2000/XP. Plus, you don't have to mess with the Windows kernel, which can really suck if you do something wrong. I like another good program called Screen Booty even better. It works with Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP, but you'll need to pay $18 when the 60-day free trial period ends.

    Hacking = more fun

I never like doing things the easy way, so I'm going to explain how to hack your WinXP boot screen by modifying the Windows kernel in Resource Hacker. Modifying the kernel is really risky, and if you mess things up, Windows may not even start. Please be careful. No, onto the danger! Start by getting the tools you need.

Every smart Windows tweaker needs Resource Hacker. Download it.

You'll also need an image editor that can import palettes such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. I'm using Paint Shop Pro's free trial edition.

    The step-by-step

    1. Locate ntoskrnl.exe in your \Windows\System32 folder. You might have to unhide the folder.

    2. Make a copy of your ntoskrnl.exe and rename it ntoskrnl.bak for backup safety.

    3. Launch Resource Hacker and open ntoskrnl.exe.

    4. In the left hand you will see a list of resources to edit. Open the first tree called Bitmaps and you'll see numbers 1 through 12. The Windows XP Pro bitmaps are numbers 1, 8, and 10. Windows XP Home bitmaps are numbered 1, 7, and 9. The bitmaps are slightly different shapes and sizes based on the graphics and text for each. In this tutorial we'll work with Windows XP Pro. If you use Home, substitute the numbers for your OS.

    5. Select No. 1. The bitmap will appear completely black, but it really isn't. For some reason Microsoft removed the color palette from the logo to another location in Windows XP. We'll fix it later in our image editor.

    6. Go to the Action Menu and choose ';Save Bitmap.'; You can save the bitmap wherever you want, but remember where you put them for later. Repeat this process for numbers 8 and 10.

    7. Open your image editor (my steps are for Paint Shop Pro 8, but you Photoshop experts can go that route). Open all three of your saved bitmap images. When opened, they should appear totally black.

    8. We'll have to import the palette to see the actual images. Save the following file to Program Files\Jasc\Paintshoppro\Palettes.

Download Paint Shop Pro Color Palette

Side note: you might need to right-click and ';Save Target As'; if your browser tries to open the file as a bunch of numbers. Make sure you rename the file with the extention ';.PSPpalette'; if that's not the extention by default.

    9. In Paint Shop Pro, make sure the bitmap 1 window is active and press Shift + O to import your palette. If you have multiple palettes available, select your new one to import the colors used in the original boot screen.

Important: Make sure to select Maintain Indexes in the bottom options before importing. If you've already got all three images open at once in your canvas, you will need to apply the palette to bitmaps 8 and 10 as well with the steps above to make the images visible.

    10. Modify the bitmaps however you like and save them over the existing bitmaps 1,8, and 10. They will make up your new boot screen.

    11. Open Resource Hacker again, and reopen the ntoskrnl.exe. Under the Action menu, choose ';Replace Bitmap.'; Select Bitmap to Replace for bitmap 1, then click ';Open file with new Bitmap'; and find your edited image. Click replace. Follow the same steps with bitmap 8 and 10.

    12. Once you replace all 3 bitmaps, choose Save As and save your new ntoskrnl.exe to a directory other then the system32 directory. You don't want to overwrite the original while it's in use. Saving it to your desktop is fine.

    13. You have the option to test out your new boot screen before totally overwriting the original. First, name your new ntoskrnl.exe something different (like ntsarah.exe). In boot.ini, locate this string:

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WI?Windows XP Professional'; /fastdetect

Add a line just above it with this string:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WI?new boot screen'; /fastdetect\kernel=ntsarah.exe (or whatever you named your new ntoskrnl.exe)

Now, move your new and renamed ntoskrnl.exe back into your system32 folder. This will allow you to choose which kernel you boot into before Windows starts.

Now go ahead and restart. When you get to the prompt, choose ';My new boot screen'; and see if you like it. If you're happy, go back into boot.ini and delete the string you added.

    14. You don't want to keep multiple booting options in your boot.ini. When Windows has critical updates or other updates it needs to install on your system, it only updates what it considers the original kernel, the ntoskrl.exe. Basically, you want to overwrite the original ntoskrnl.exe file so you only have one copy in the System32 folder. Remember, you did make a backup of the true original before at the very start of this exercise, so you can always revert back if you absolutely have to.

In order to overwrite properly, Windows File Protection makes you reboot into safe mode (reboot and hit F8 before the boot screen appears). You could also boot off a DOS bootdisk to overwrite the original ntoskrnl.exe in the System32 folder. Once you overwrite the file, reboot. Your new screen should appear!

If you're still with me, I commend you. I found this exercise really fun. Hopefully you did too.

I have Vista preinstalled on my laptop & want to change to XP. In SIMPLE easy language...how do I do it?

Im not a computer whizz and computer speak just baffles me, I just really need someone to tell me what software I need and how to get my computer to use XP and not Vista as I have found that Vista won't read files sent to me in emails etc as not compatible. Please help!I have Vista preinstalled on my laptop %26amp; want to change to XP. In SIMPLE easy language...how do I do it?
    1. You are less likely to get infected using Vista than XP

    2. Vista will have a longer product life than XP will.

    3. You have to go through the bother of obtaining an XP product key, and cancelling the Vista one.

    4. Do you have any specific reason to do this? i.e. are you running a piticular program incompatible with Vista?

I seriously doubt that your files are not compatible. Are they zipped? WinRARed? Corrupt? Could be a thousand reasons....

You see where I'm coming from.....I have Vista preinstalled on my laptop %26amp; want to change to XP. In SIMPLE easy language...how do I do it?
    Take a look here.
Firstly I doubt it is the operating system that is the reason you cannot open files sent to you by email, probably they are in a program format which you don't currently have. Vista is a brilliant operating system but if you really want to go backwards and put XP on, then before you do anything, make sure you have the Windows XP installation disk otherwise you will end up uninstalling Vista (and with it all your programs and data) and having nothing.
    Hi,

You can certainly change back to XP as long as you have an XP windows installation disk and are prepared to download all the drivers for your pc.

You will need to backup all your data to another drive or cd / dvd.

The instructions on how to do so are here :-

    http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cf

However as it is such a lot of work to downgrade wouldn't it be easier to fix the mail problem?

What mail program are you using?

What format are the attachments in?

Just mail me and I'll try and help.

    Arnak
Buy a copy of xp insert it in your cd drive and read whatever is written carefully a setup menu will come up press install windows xp then just follow the instructions.

Beware though you will lose your data so make a backup before installing.
Install the progam that the sender used to create the attachment and it should open from Outlook Express.

Or you can copy the file to another folder like My Documents or Desktop and open it from there.

    http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/14
    What you'll need....

Windows installation disc and product key.

Driver installation programs for your graphics and sound cards plus any SATA drivers your system requires and the disc from your ISP (Virgin, BT etc.) to enable internet connection.

Most systems are set to boot from CD/DVD by default. To check yours, on boot up, keep tapping either F2, Esc or Del (depending on your system) to get to the BIOS setup. Check in the boot order that the CD/DVD is the first boot device. Place the Win disc in then save and exit.

You might be asked to 'Press any key to boot from CD', do so. If not, restart with the CD in.

Follow the prompts to format the existing Windows installation and install the new version.

Somewhere along the way, you'll be prompted to hit F8 to agree with the terms, enter the regional details and the product key.

The computer may restart a couple of times, but leave the disc in.

Once the installation is finished, you'll be asked to activate Windows.

Choose the 'Activate by phone' option (you'll need the group of numbers on screen and a pen and paper to write down the activation code to enter).

When you've activated, load your drivers/ISP get some anti-virus and run Windows update, You're done!
if you have the vista to XP DOWNGRADE disk just install that and follow instuctions.

if you only have a XP disk you need to reformat the drive then install from scratch!!
backup your stuff to an external hard drive, then pop in the windows xp DVD and reboot your machine. the instructions which follow are simple and very clear....good luck
If you are real dummy then leave this task to someone who is familliar with windows installation process. The best thing for you will be to contact the venture from which you have bought your laptop.

or if you really wan to do it yourself than used a windows xp Dark Edition setup disk

put the cd in the drive then restart

    choose boot from cd

    the set up will run

    you just follow the instruction

note: when you change your OS from vista to xp most of your drivers will not be working. Commonly sound will not be working, graphic will not function properly

  • Formating and Changing XP from HD?

    Hi folks.

Let see i I can make myself clear:

I have two Hard Drives (C and D).

XP and all my programs are in D: and The files are in C:

C: got corrupted with some viruses so I decided to clean everything up from my computer by formatting.I would go first by C: and then to D:

But I cant format C:, it won't let me,it goes until 99% of the process and then it throws up an error.

The only way I figure out is by inserting XP Cd, formatting C: and making it my principal hard drive.

Until then I have no problems. But I wonder:

Suppose I install XP on C:, then start the computer to format D:, won't it be aproblem to have XP installed in both Hard drives,

I'll re formulate my question because as I am not an English Native I might've confused some people.

My quesion is: Having installed XP in C: then I want to format D: as it has the corrupted files and XP, but at the time of choosing to format D: I would be having XP installed in both of the hard drives.

How can I do? Is there a way by which before installing xp it formats both of the hd's?Formating and Changing XP from HD?
Typically when doing a reinstall of Windows it will give you an option to format your drive. However, I don't think you can format them both at the same time. You can have XP installed on two different drives with no problems but your computer will only boot the XP files from your main hard drive. Hope that helpsFormating and Changing XP from HD?
You can format C and then D. When you restart your computer, hold F8 and load your BIOS and boot from your CD-Rom drive with the XP disk in it. Perform a clean installation which will completely erase everything on the drive in which you put it on and install XP on it also. That should fix your problem.

How do I change my XP internet browser to have lots of tabs instead of that stupid list after I open 5 pages?

cmon guys help its killing me. i got a lot of surfing to do tonightHow do I change my XP internet browser to have lots of tabs instead of that stupid list after I open 5 pages?
At first, you can help it by disabling grouping windows with the same name. It's done through Properties of the Taskbar, and there unchecking ';Group similar taskbar buttons';. Then you will have plenty of buttons on the taskbar instead of that list. To use tabs in Internet Explorer you need to have version 7 or 8.

Then in menu ';Tools';, menu point ';Internet Options';, there you have tab ';General';, section ';Tabs'; and there click on the button ';Settings'; and in new displayed dialogue you have to check ';Enable Tabbed Browsing (requires restarting Internet Explorer)';.How do I change my XP internet browser to have lots of tabs instead of that stupid list after I open 5 pages?

i need to install windows 98 on my pc that currently has xp on it. i dont care about safety risks about it!! i dont care that 98 is a bad os!! i just need to know how to do it, it first told me to restart in msdos mode, whioch i restarted in command prompt mode instead, then it wouldnt let me take xp out (from add + remove)How can i change from xp to windows 98?
If you already have your Windows 98 disk, you can boot from that. which will format the drive and remove XP, then it will install 98 for you. Just remember to back up any files you want to keep because it will wipe everything. How can i change from xp to windows 98?
Ok man here is what you do. If you have the Windows 98 install disk, which i will assume that you do. You insert it into the cd drive, reboot the computer and boot from the disk, then you simply follow the basic instructions from there, and format your hard disk, then it will install Windows 98 on to your computer, all you need on your end is the cd key and name etc. Hope this helps
If you have windows98 SE . You should be able to BOOT to the cd , as long as your cdrom is set as the 1st boot device in your bios boot sequence settings. And the harddrive is set to the second boot device.

Boot to the windows98 se cd and format and install.

If your windows98 is not the ';SE'; version. You will need to format your hard drive with a bootdisk. You can obtain a boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com
I don't think win98 is a bad o/s, I just know that it will not work with more of the newer software coming out. Buf if you really want to downgrade, here is a site that instructs on it...
I suggest you take your hdd to best buy and have them format it for you.

No, that's not the way. Restart your PC using in MS-DOS mode booting from the installation CD of Win XP, then the Disc will give you three options: install, repair and uninstall (or format)

You need to format your computer's hard disk by doing this, then you can install Win 98 as you want.

If you don't have a Win XP installation CD, you will need a Boot floppy disk, insert a floppy disk in your floppy drive, open the Windows Explorer, right click on the floppy drive, click on ';Format'; and select ';Make a Bootable disk'; and click OK. This will cearte a Boot floppy disk. Then, restar your computer booting from the floppy disk in the floppy drive by pressing F9 and selecting the floppy drive. Once you have entered in MS-DOS, type A: and press the Enter key, then type ';format C:'; and you will format your hard disk and then you can install Win 98.

Be sure to back up all your data and files because by formatting your disk you will erase all the data on your computer, and you have to get the installation CDs of your favorite programs too. Because they will be erased too. I wish you luck. I hope my answer helps you and that you understand the risk of formatting your computer. How can i change from xp to windows 98?
stick in a windows disk and choose format. then shut it down and stick in the windows 98 disk and choose install. take note of sound drivers, you may need to seach for them.
Your best bet would be to make your machine dual boot. Use the Windows 98 to boot your machine into DOS mode and use FDISK to create a new active partition of about five gig. Install Windows 98 on the freshly FAT formatted partition and when you boot your machine you will be asked which OS you want to boot into.

How to access BIOS in XP to change ROM order?

i got the windows\system32\config\system error today, and i need to access bios to change the rom boot order so that the xp cd-rom boots before the hard drive. when i hold ';del'; buring boot, it has alot of grey lines at the bottom for a bit, then goes to the error screen again. how do i access bios? How to access BIOS in XP to change ROM order?
First, if all you need to do is boot to the CD-ROM first, your BIOS might support a ';Boot Menu'; option that allows you to temporarily change boot order without going into the CMOS settings. A number of motherboards with AWARD BIOS installed have this feature: usually by pressing F11. A menu then appears, asking which device you want to boot to (external USB, optical drive, hard drive, etc.).

If you need to make changes in the BIOS, it's possible that the Delete key is not how you access the system BIOS. It varies by manufacturer. I've worked on PCs that use Delete, F8 and F10 and there may be others as well.

If you're *sure* that Delete will get you into your CMOS settings, make sure you're tapping it and not holding it down. The POST screen should briefly show ';Loading Setup...'; or something similar when you've done it right.

I can't suggest what another user here recommends and resetting your BIOS by removing the battery (or by resetting it in the more traditional fashion and moving the jumper on the motherboard). That will wipe ALL of your CMOS settings; restoring them to factory defaults, which may not be appropriate for your particular system. How to access BIOS in XP to change ROM order?
When your bios is loading it says at the bottom press f8 to access options or setup. Try that. Then go to boot order and put cd-rom first.

    Hope this helps!
you have to keep tapping ';del'; just after you press the power button on some pcs, on others you keep tapping f8.

or you can just take out the cmos battery for 10 mins, this will reset the bios.
try this. when you first power up the computer start tapping F8 and it should give you several different boot options. choose the one that says safe mode with command prompt and hit enter. if the computer boots in safe mode, first install the windows cd into the cd drive, then go to the command prompt and type in, ';sfc.exe/scannow';, and hit enter. this is a system tool that scans your windows files and fixes the ones that are corrupt or missing. as far as accessing the bios goes, usually tapping the delete key will bring it up, but some pc's are different. my brother has a compaq presario and i know that you have to hit a different key to access the bios. it usually tells you what to press on the first screen that comes up before windows starts to load

Ur choice...How can i change windows xp to windows vista?
    Buy a copy of Vista.

Back up all your files on your computer.

Boot to the DVD of Vista.

    Then install.
you have to buy the windows vista update for your computer.
Just my opinion but DON'T!!! Stay away from Vista is my recommendation. I purchased a computer with Vista and the operating system was TERRIBLE out of the box and just got worse. It is so slow at everything and everytime you do anything it just gets slower. I am doing very little on it (am not ';surfing'; or downloading things) and yet it bogs down and defragging does not help.

Just my experience but steer clear..
....u hav 2 choices- get a copy of vista installation(dat's the sucky way) or the easy %26amp; safer way...get the setup exe file of the vista transformation pack-that is readily available thru direct download on the net all over.....just google vista transformation pack %26amp; u'll easily get links, size is a mere 28-30MB.......works just fine-only thing is it's not full-on vista so it's a lot easier on ur curent pc config...u can also tweak it up 2 ur specs....

It certainly is. Just go to
