How to change headphone socket on Windows XP?

The computer only recognises the headphones when I plug them into the base socket. I want to be able to use the headphones socket on the monitor - can someone please tell me how to do change the settings so that the computer recognises the headphones when I plug them into the socket on the monitor (step by step)? The monitor speakers must be connetec to the computer first. Then you can connect your headphones.

Your saying that the monitor doesn't have speakers unless they are built in.

Well if your monitor hasn't got any speakers in the first place then you can't

plug your headphones in because there would be no circuitry there.

You might have a socket where the jack goes into but it wont be connected

to anything. It will just be a standard fitting in the frame to fill the hole.

Changing the settings on the computer wont make any difference.
